There are several trails as well as cross country routes in Dunsmore Canyon. The most obvious is the road up the canyon, this dead ends in the canyon about 1/2 mile in, there is a loop road also, the next offical route is the Cooks Canyon Trail it starts off this loop road and at one time went to Mt Lukens Road but that portion of the trail is now closed due to severe erosion and lots of loose scree. The third trail is what I call the East Ridge Trail, it starts at the 4th spur off the main canyon road about 100 ft on the right. It's not maintanained but I do go up there ocassionally and do some brush clearence. This trail is about 2 miles long and meets up with Pickens Spur a road on the east side of Mt Lukens.
The Trails and roads shown on the map
here are APPROXIMATIONS from memory and should not be used for navigation
you'll have to find the actual route when you are there. The Blue Cross
Counrty route labled CC#1 I have hiked and the Green Cross Counrty route
CC#2 is a POSSIBLE untried route
All I know at this time is a winery was here at one time and there have been several airplane crashes in and around the canyon. I have one report related to me third hand about a large aircraft engine in the canyon but no location, except to say it's not on any trail, the hunt continues! The Cooks Canyon Trail is part of the Rim of the Valley trail system and presumably the construction of it was funded by the State of California
There are no references to Dunsmore Canyon in any of my guide books, if you know of any please contact me
