La Tuna Canyon Fire Road

This road starts along La Tuna Canyon Road at the La Tuna exit from I-210, At the locked gate follow an abandoned section of La Tuna Canyon road to the unlocked gated entrance for the Fire Road. This ascends very quickly giving you expansive views of Crescenta Valley and portions of San Fernando Valley. Were the old Las Barras Canyon road intersects are Bee Hives, here I generally take the purple cross country route saving 0.90 miles, though it's very steep. Continuing along the road you cross La Tuna Canyon creek several times which can have water in it after extended period sof rain, where the Bee Hives and an unused steel water tank is the upper terminus of the cross country route. You get a nice view here of Sunland, Tujunga, Mount Lukens and the Crescenta Valley here, on a real clear day you can see Mt San Jacinto and other points south, catch your breath and enjoy the view, continuing up you round the corner and catch a glimpse of several of the antennae on "Verdugo Peak" continuing up to a small saddle, this is the Los Angeles / Glendale border, you can continue on the road (0.7 miles) or take the firebreak up (the purple dashed line, 0.46 miles). At the intersection of "Verdugo Mountain Motor Way" you get sweeping views of the San Fernando Valley, Griffith Park, Glendale, Burbank. Turn left here going 0.30 miles to the fenced off summit Verdugo Peak, if you take the cross country route turn right at the road and follow it for 0.20 miles taking the ridge at the microwave relay station. On the cross country route watch for snakes in the last 500 feet to the road as I've seen lots of them here.
