Future Projects
Colby Canyon Trail
I would like to get a crew together to at a minimum brush, repair
some washouts and do some erosion control. The upper 1.2 miles of this trail
are in bad shape and with 2 Sawyers and 6 Swampers this could be done in two or three days (2 or
3 weekend days). This project would require Forest Service permission and
logistical support, IE: chain saws, gas and oil, hand tools, keys to the
gate so we can drive to the top of the trail etc. I feel this is a good
project because a lot of people use this trail especially many new hikers.
UPDATE!
Work has started on the Colby Canyon Trail. The JPL hiking
club and I have started brushing this trail. Work started on Saturday October
16th 1999. I plan to brush this trail, down from the top to the first crossing
of colby canyon creek roughly 1.2 miles.

Dark Canyon Trail
I'd also like to restore the tread on the Dark Canyon Trail AKA
Grizzly Flat Trail, and possibly restore the abandoned section from the
campsite to Grizzly Flat junction, this trail is to the east of the Stone
Canyon Trail, it's a remnant of a much longer trail that went from the Oak
Wilde in Arroyo Seco to the Big Tujunga in years past. This project would
require forest service permission and support as access to this trail is
limited and requires a hike of several miles from any direction to get to
it, but there is a road that leads to the top of the trail.
Trail Canyon Trail
This trail is on the north side of the Big Tujunga, and goes to mendenhall
ridge in between Indian Bend Saddle and Iron Mountain. I've reports this
trail is in bad shape, but I've not been up there recently. As I recall
the trail needs works roughly 1/4 mile above Tom Lucas Trail Camp down,
probably to the falls about 1 1/2 mile long section of trail with a 2 1/2
mile hike in to work about 1000ft to1300 ft elevation gain/loss.
Bear Canyon Trail
This Trail is an eastern side canyon of the Arroyo Seco. The
upper portion of this trail from the Brown Mountain ridge to the canyon
bottom is severly overgrown. Fortunatly there is a road nearby so a relativly
short hike is required to get to this trail section.
Mt Lowe and San Gabriel Peak trails
Portions of both these trails are in bad shape and need brushing.
Mt Lowe trail needs work from Inspiration Point to where it meets the Mt
Lowe summit trail, it probably needs work from over to Markham Saddle too.
San Gabriel Peak Trail needs work from Markham Saddle up.
